The anticipation’s been building for months, and now the big day has finally arrived: The BlackBerry Bold is now available in the U.S. Battery life is excellent (outpacing that of the iPhone’s), and RIM’s first 3G offering is plenty fast with downloads and e-mailing. Unfortunately, there’s no centralized place to upgrade your software, at least not yet. (An App Store-like project is in the works for 2009.) Still, there’s plenty under the hood to justify the upgrade, not to mention a thinner body and chrome detailing. And re that much-discussed pleather backing: Yes, it’s ugly. But it’s also smudge-proof.
