Held last Friday, the seventh edition of MAN—the Topman-sponsored show of menswear that closes London fashion week—continued to confirm Kim Jones as the don of male Brit sportswear. This year's roster included Christopher Shannon, an ex-Jones assistant, whose silver and white palette and transmogrified athleticwear echoed that of his old boss. James Long's focus on skins and synthetics yielded a want-that trench in natural leather, but another coat in sheer lilac nylon looked equally desirable; the butch-effete face-off had a Jones tinge. Hans Madsen focused on chunky felted knits as Nordic as his name, and, as spring collections go, it was very, er, fall. But didn't MAN save the best to last! Any chance to compliment Alistair Mackie's contribution to fashion can't be missed. As stylist for the Topman collection, he showed a collection inspired by Japanese go-karters. Beginning with sleek monotone speed-racer outfits in primary shades (pictured), he moved on to tailored pieces that delivered the aerodynamism of extreme activewear in nylon, cotton, and even leather that had been boiled, glazed, and/or crushed. Mackie's work always seems to have one eye on apocalypse. Here, he rendered The End in the most eye-poppingly positive colors imaginable.
