The Perry Ellis show was in many ways a repudiation of many of the trends in menswear as seen on the runways in Milan and Paris just a couple months ago. Decidedly masculine and conservative, the Perry Ellis show was in firm contrast to the waifish models and gender-bending clothes seen in shows like Prada and Raf Simmons.
At Perry Ellis, the tanned and muscular models sported facial scruff, a rarity these days in men’s fashion shows. The masculine vibe was most strongly amplified in the clothes, though, where a 70’s influence pervaded. The shirt collars worn over and outside jackets gave a grandfatherly, Boca Raton feel, which was seen also in pastel colored leisure jackets and plaid shirts.
The collection felt a bit stunted when compared to the overall feel of Perry Ellis’ show last season, which was successful because it managed to infuse a subtle undercurrent of trendiness to clothes that were ultimately very traditional. This season, the designs felt outdated, unable to reinvent the 70’s Miami Beach scene into something enviable.
